In February, ITA COSUF* visited the Silvertown Tunnel project, where Transport for London, in partnership with Riverlinx, is designing and constructing a new 1.4 km twin-tube road tunnel beneath the River Thames. This tunnel is set to open in Spring 2025, connecting North Greenwich and Silvertown for the first time.

The International Tunneling Association Committee on Safety in Underground Facilities (ITA COSUF*) held meetings with the steering board and activity groups. On the second day, we gained more insight into the Silvertown tunnel project and visited the tunnel construction site.
We are particularly interested in how this project is planning its operational stage, ensuring the tunnel's high availability through digitalization and asset management, as well as planning for operation and maintenance.
The project has entered a new phase and will soon be prepared for commissioning and the final arrangements before opening.
We want to thank Riverlinx and Transport for London for this opportunity to learn from this project.
