Temporary alternative measures for tunnel safety

Temporary alternative measures for tunnel safety

In March I was invited to a Italian PIARC conference, discussing Temporary alternative measures for tunnel safety.

30 April 2019 expires the deadline assigned by the European Commission for safety of in road tunnels on the Trans-European Road Network. The conference focused on ways to improve safety by alternative measures, necessary in many cases due to difficulties encountered by public institutions and motorway operators in carrying out all the planned interventions.

Expert Meeting/Workshop on NEC

Expert Meeting/Workshop on NEC

New energy carriers (also known as NEC) for road transport, such as battery electric cars, and fuel cell cars, entail new risks for the safety of tunnels and underground parking lots. In order to get an idea of the magnitude of these risks are and how they can be controlled, research is needed, preferably in a European context. That is the most important outcome of the two-day international Workshop on NEC in Road Tunnels that took place in Utrecht on 20 and 21 and was organized by KPT, ITA-COSUF and PIARC.

Use of new materials in tunnels

Use of new materials in tunnels

New materials can in many cases have properties that are better suited to build, operate and maintain, and ultimately to rehabilitate and recycle. New materials can also last longer and have other properties that can provide improvements in terms of fire, traffic accidents and other external stresses. In addition, new materials can have a much better environmental profile than today's solutions, both in terms of component content, but also in relation to transport and installation. New materials can also have a very favorable impact on health, environment and safety due to low weight, and greater opportunities for developing smart solutions.

Standardization on the agenda

Standardization on the agenda

Society is built on standards, and standards promote innovation! When everyone in the industry uses the same starting point - a common standard - then good practice can be implemented more easily, which in turn makes it easier to build our society in a safe, sustainable and profitable way.
